Launch of UNFPA’s Demographic Futures Survey 2026 Report

This July, GGP Director Anne Gauthier joined the launch of UNFPA's Demographic Futures Survey 2026 report, which takes a closer look at how young adults across Eastern Europe and Central Asia are navigating relationships, parenthood and anincreasingly uncertain future. The report seeks to move the conversation away from “panic, population targets and assumptions about young people’s choices”, focusing instead on the social, economic and institutional conditions that shape whether people are able to build the families and lives they want.

Alongside newly developed questions, the survey builds on established measures from the European Social Survey and the Generations and Gender Survey, such as questions on partnership formation, fertility intentions, family life, global uncertainty, and institutional trust. The regional analysis also draws directly on GGS findings, including research on the gap between ideal and actual family size and the role of housing in fertility decisions. It is a compelling example of how GGS data, measures and insights feed into a wider network of research on demographic change.
