Wealth modifies relationships between kin and women's fertility in high-income countries

Schaffnit, S. & Sear, R. (2014). Behavioral Ecology, 25(4), 834-842 10.1093/beheco/aru059

Kin are generally expected to behave more cooperatively with their relatives than with unrelated individuals, and this cooperative behavior may result in positive effects on fitness. Such kin effects are likely to be modified by resource availability: in contexts of resource stress, cooperation among kin may disappear or weaken as more energy is required for investment in self. We use …

Using the Theory of Planned Behaviour to Study Fertility Intentions in Romania

Caplescu, R. (2014). Procedia Economics and Finance, 10, 125-133 10.1016/S2212-5671(14)00285-8

Fertility intentions are considered an important determinant of behaviour. Using binary logistic regression on a sample of 1851 women aged 18-44 years from the Generations and Gender Survey 2005 wave in Romania, the present paper analyses the factors influencing intentions to have a child on the short-term. The results indicate that age and the number of children already born to …

Bernardi, F. & Radl, J. (2014). Demographic Research, 30, 1653-1680 10.4054/DemRes.2014.30.61

BACKGROUND In this paper we study the long-term consequences of parental divorce in a comparative perspective. Special attention is paid to the heterogeneity of the consequences of divorce for children’s educational attainment by parental education. OBJECTIVE The study attempts to establish whether the parental breakup penalty for tertiary education attainment varies by socioeconomic background, and whether it depends on the …

The impact of grandparental investment on mothers’ fertility intentions in four European countries

Tanskanen, A. & Rotkirch, A. (2014). Demographic Research, 31, 1-26 10.4054/DemRes.2014.31.1

BACKGROUND Evolutionary theory predicts that grandparental investment should support the childbearing of adult children, but evidence from contemporary developed countries is mixed or relatively weak. One possible reason for this lack of clarity is that grandparental support for fertility may vary by country, the economic situation of the adult child’s household, and the lineage and the sex of the grandparent. …

The gap between births intended and births achieved in 22 European countries, 2004–07

Harknett, K. & Hartnett, C. (2014). Population Studies, 68(3), 265-282 10.1080/00324728.2014.899612

Using data from the 2004 and 2007 waves of the European Social Survey (ESS), we find that for every 100 births intended, about 60 births occur, on average, across 22 countries. This shortfall in fertility masks substantial heterogeneity between subgroups within the populations surveyed. Motherhood status, age, partnership status, and the strength of fertility intentions moderate the relationship between women’s …

The analysis is based on the first wave of the Generations and Gender Survey of Italy and Hungary. We …

In countries of Mediterranean Europe, characterized by strong family ties, close residential proximity between kin facilitates frequent exchanges of free mutual aid. This article focuses on the challenges to proximity posed by the spread of cohabitation in Italy. We consider an extensive definition of kin networks, including siblings and, for women in a couple, the parents and siblings of the …

Jobs, careers, and becoming a parent under state socialist and market conditions: Evidence from Estonia 1971-2006

Billingsley, S., Sakkeus, L., & Puur, A. (2014). Demographic Research, 30, 1733-1768 10.4054/DemRes.2014.30.64

BACKGROUND Entering employment and achieving a stable position in the labour market are considered important preconditions for childbearing. Existing studies addressing the relationship between work experience and the timing of parenthood focus exclusively on Western Europe and North America. By adding an Eastern European context before and after societal transformation, this study contributes to a more comprehensive account of the …

BACKGROUND Studies explaining why cohabiters are more likely to keep money separate than spouses have mainly focused on selection processes, without taking into account the heterogeneity within both union types in levels of commitment. Cross-national studies are rare and have predominantly included Northern and Western European countries, the United States, and Canada. OBJECTIVE This study explains the higher likelihood of …

How Similar are Cohabiting and Married Parents? Second Conception Risks by Union Type in the United States and Across Europe

Perelli-Harris, B. (2014). European Journal of Population, 30(4), 437-464 10.1007/s10680-014-9320-2

Abstract The increase in births within cohabitation in the United States and across Europe suggests that cohabitation and marriage have become more similar with respect to childbearing. However, little is known about additional childbearing after first birth. Using harmonized union and fertility histories from surveys in 15 countries, this study examines second conception risks leading to a live birth for …

Despite substantial variation in the …

Dommermuth, L. & Wiik, K. (2014). YOUNG, 22(4), 323-343 10.1177/1103308814548103

Young adults in Norway mostly choose cohabitation as their first co-residential union and the age of first union formation is comparatively low. However, dissolution rates are higher in Norway than in most other parts of Europe, potentially leading to unstable relationship careers in young adulthood. Using recent survey data from Norway on men and women born 1927–73 ( N = …

Failure to Realize Fertility Intentions: A Key Aspect of the Post-communist Fertility Transition

Spéder, Z. & Kapitány, B. (2014). Population Research and Policy Review, 33(3), 393-418 10.1007/s11113-013-9313-6

Our paper focuses on the realization of fertility intentions, exploring a new aspect of the post-communist fertility transition. By making use of a follow-up study, it was possible to compare five European countries and to analyze the chances of realizing short-term, time-dependent fertility intentions. There is always a difference between intention and behavior. It is partly due to demographic and …
