This paper by Lars Dommermuth and Sebastian Klüsener (2018) examines the links between moving behavior and other life course events. While empirical research increasingly connects residential mobility to developments in different life domains, the authors argue that a comprehensive understanding of moving decisions must also account for prior plans across multiple areas of life, since not all intentions, and the moves potentially associated with them, are ultimately realised. Drawing on representative data from Norway, the study analyses these dynamics across four life stages: young adulthood, the family phase, middle age, and retirement. The findings reveal highly significant associations between intentions and events in various life domains, as well as between moving intentions and actual relocations, across all four stages. Moreover, the importance of specific life domains in shaping moving intentions and realised moves varies over the life course and depends on whether all moves or only long-distance moves are considered.
